Coburg stormwater harvesting project

Coburg stormwater harvesting project

At Coburg, 10km north of the Melbourne CBD Yarra Valley Water in partnership with Moreland City Council and Melbourne Water intends to harvest stormwater from two existing stormwater drains. The Federal government has also provided some funding for this project.

Why was this site chosen?

The reasons for choosing this site in Coburg for the harvesting and reuse project included:

  • the redevelopment of central Coburg.
  • the large surrounding areas of public open space, which require irrigation during summer months.
  • the room for a large stormwater harvesting tank.
  • the proximity to large drainage infrastructure.
  • the willingness of local council to explore alternative options.

What will the water be used for?

The stormwater will be screened to remove contaminants such as litter, oil and dirt before it is stored. It will then be pumped to a new recycled water treatment plant capable of producing recycled water that would be delivered via a new dedicated pipe network suitable for flushing toilets, washing clothes and irrigating public open spaces, providing benefit to residents both inside and outside of the Central Coburg precinct.

What are the benefits?

  • reduction in drinking water use by 30%
  • reduced pollution of the Merri Creek in terms of nutrients, litter and flow volumes.
  • expected to save 213 million litres of drinking water every year.

When will construction take place?

At this stage it is anticipated construction will commence during summer 2011/12 with the major components of construction completed within 12 months. The project is scheduled to be completed and supplying water in the 2012/13 summer. The reserve will then be available for recreational use once the grass is established.
