Kalkallo Stormwater Harvesting project

Our innovative Kalkallo Stormwater Harvesting and Reuse Project is one of international significance, with the ultimate possibility of supplementing the Kalkallo region’s local drinking water supply with treated stormwater.

It will involve capturing and treating around 365 million litres of stormwater harvested from a commercial development 38 km north of Melbourne’s central business district.

The environmental outcomes are significant:

  • Less water extracted from rivers; and
  • Less nutrients discharges to local streams.

The project is supported by MAB Corporation, Melbourne Water, and Hume City Council. In 2009 it was awarded a Federal Government grant of $9.7 million.

The project also won the ‘Master Planning and Design category’ of the 2009 Victorian Stormwater Excellence Awards, and a ‘highly commended’ at the subsequent national awards – despite being only conceptual at the time.

Design of the storage basin and treatment plant will soon be finalised with construction to commence in July 2010.

In partnership with Moreland City Council and Melbourne Water, we also commenced a process to recycle stormwater for the Coburg Principal Activity Centre.

In this project stormwater will be extracted from several existing drains, treated to the required standard, and reticulated to nearby houses and apartments for garden watering, clothes washing and toilet flushing.

Our Kalkallo project demonstrates an innovative approach to solving common urban water issues and thinking differently about the best way to manage water resources in the face of ongoing drought and climate change. It underpins our commitment to create sustainable cities for our future.
