kinglake An environmentally friendly sewerage service

As residents rebuild their properties after the Black Saturday bushfires, work has recommenced on a project of national and international significance to provide a sustainable and integrated sewerage service to properties in Kinglake West.

In partnership with residents, the Victorian Water Trust and the Shire of Murrindindi, the project will provide a sewerage service to 93 properties which formerly used septic tank systems to manage their domestic wastewater.  The new service will include high-tech septic tank systems integrated with a separate grey water system located on each property.

Each septic tank system will be connected to a reticulated sewerage system which locally treats and recycles the collected wastewater. A distinguishing feature is the use of urine diverting toilets and local agricultural recycling of the urine.

We believe this is the first time in Victoria that urine diverting toilets have been used within an established community. The collected urine will be used as an environmentally sustainable alternative to artificial fertilisers.

The objective of the project is to deliver the best environmental and community outcomes, and to demonstrate the significant local environmental and health improvements that such an of such innovative sewerage solution can offer and to see whether a similar solution can be applied to other areas.

The reticulated sewerage system is due to be commissioned by September 2011.

Urine diversion technology - social research

A research study to monitor the acceptability of urine diversion technology by tracking user perceptions was conducted by the Institute for Sustainable Futures at the University of Technology, Sydney. The final report was completed in September 2011 and is available for viewing here. Appendices referred to in the report are also available upon request.
