Work nearing completion on sewerage services for a growing Greenvale

Friday 8 April 2011

Construction is nearing completion on Yarra Valley Water’s $11 million, 7.6 kilometre branch sewer in Greenvale, which will improve sewerage services and cater for growth in the area. This includes new developments around Greenvale Reservoir such as Greenvale Rise, Greenvale Lakes East and Greenvale Lakes West.

According to Tony Kelly, Managing Director Yarra Valley Water, the expansion of the Melbourne Urban Growth Boundary to the east and west of Greenvale Reservoir and north of Somerton Road as part of the South Hume Growth Corridor, has the potential to create an additional 7,500 new residential properties over the next 25-30 years, which require significant sewerage infrastructure investments.

‘This important infrastructure upgrade means that Greenvale’s existing sewerage system can continue to meet the needs of current and future generations in the area,’ Mr Kelly says.

‘In addition, the sewerage system will be better able to cope with storms, reducing the risk of overflows into the storm water system and the environment.’

The upgrade began in June 2010 and combines open trench and trenchless bore construction methods; open trench involves digging a trench in which to lay the pipes, while the trenchless bore method avoids the need for excavation work. Large machinery has arrived from Queensland to undertake the trenchless boring works.

An additional $3 million Flow Control Facility will be built later this year, also increasing the capacity of the sewer to cater for inflows from extreme wet weather events, better protecting the local environment.

The route of the new sewer, determined by a comprehensive planning process and environmental management plan, will involve work south of Somerton Road, along the southern side of the Yuroke Creek; along the western boundary of Greenvale Reservoir Park, between the park entry on Somerton Road and next to Aitken College; and along the eastern boundary of Greenvale Reservoir, between Somerton Road and James Mirams Drive.

Traffic management is being provided for pedestrians and cyclists who travel along the Yuroke Creek path.

‘Yarra Valley Water will make every effort to minimise the impact of these important works on the community,’ says Mr Kelly.

‘We are working closely with local residents, community groups and authorities including Hume City Council, Melbourne Water, Parks Victoria and VicRoads to minimise any disruption.’

Yarra Valley Water is keeping in regular contact with residents and businesses along the new sewer route, and information is also available at www.yvw.com.au by clicking on ‘Works in your area’. Hours of construction will normally be limited to between 7.30am and 5.30pm.

‘Our customers in Greenvale are benefiting from a multi-million dollar program of infrastructure spending. By investing in our sewerage systems today, Yarra Valley Water will continue to improve its service levels to customers well into the future,’ says Mr Kelly.
