Residents asked for feedback on proposal for new sewerage services
Tuesday 16 March 2011
With nearly 600 properties in Warrandyte set to receive new sewerage services provided by Yarra Valley Water over the next five years, the water utility is encouraging local residents to give their feedback on the servicing options recommended for the area.
Yarra Valley Water Managing Director, Tony Kelly, said the new system will allow residents to replace their current septic tank systems with more environmentally friendly sewerage services.
‘Providing new sewerage infrastructure is vital to protecting our environment and ensuring the system continues to meet the sewerage needs of the community,’ Mr Kelly said.
‘Warrandyte residents will have the opportunity to have their say on the sewerage servicing options recommended for the area via an online forum available in March, and the final sewer design will consider all feedback received from residents.’
According to Mr Kelly, the online forum will be active for one month, and will present information on the different sewer options available.
‘Residents interested in having a say in how we deliver the new sewerage services to Warrandyte should visit the forum at www.warrandytebacklog.com.au to register,’ Mr Kelly said.
‘This information will help us to provide sewer services in the best way for the community,’ he added.
Mr Kelly said new sewerage services will provide enormous benefits to residents, such as reduction of odours around the home, no more ongoing costs to maintain or upgrade their septic tank system, improved property value, as well as protecting the health of the community and local environment.
‘Eliminating septic tanks will help to protect the health of the community and environment, including the Yarra River and its local waterways.
‘When most of these septic systems were installed, environmental standards were very different from today. The performance of many of the systems is no longer acceptable or appropriate today, and has a significant impact on the environment,’ he said.
Construction on the new sewerage system is expected to commence in 2011/12 through to 2016/17.
