Kooyong Lawn Tennis Club Case Study
Kooyong Lawn Tennis Club is regarded as The Spiritual Home of Australian Tennis and provides over 7,500 members with a wide range of facilities, including 51 tennis courts, 4 squash courts, gymnasium, swimming pool, spa, billiards room, bar, dining areas and function rooms. The famous stadium hosts world class tennis players each January at the AAMI Classic, which is a major lead up event to the Australian Open.
Water Conservation Program
Kooyong Lawn Tennis Club has reduced water use by 80% since 2006, which is over 18 million litres per year. The expansive property and large clubhouse have traditionally utilised substantial potable water to maintain facilities and services. The drought and water restrictions threatened the club’s ability to continue to operate and provide services, which prompted the need to identify opportunities where the club could improve water efficiency and secure alternative water sources.
Improving the Efficiency of Grounds and Courts
• Returfing grass courts with drought tolerant turf
• Replanting gardens with drought tolerant natives
• Upgrading tap ware and irrigation equipment
• Installation of a storage tank drawing from several reclaimed water sources
• Installation of water catchment systems from the building and grounds
• Establishment of a bore
• Development of new reticulation systems as an alternative to potable water
Water Conservation Measures within the Clubhouse
In a recent upgrade to the Kooyong Lawn Tennis Club, rain water harvesting and water efficiency measures were incorporated into the master plan for redevelopment. In addition, there have been upgrades to all amenities, such as showers, toilets and taps. Signage and other forms of communication are used to encourage members of Kooyong to be water efficient. Further information is provided about water initiatives and programs through magazine articles, website, emails and other mail outs.
