Using Vacuum Distillation to Recycle Trade Waste

Securency International is a world leader in polymer banknote production with over 30 countries issuing banknotes printed by through their systems.

They undertook a design study to compare vacuum distillation with chemical treatment systems in order to address a  trade waste issue they were experiencing. Their trade waste had two streams of concern - the electroplating waste and printing equipment washdown waste.

The Vacuum distillation system was chosen to;

  • Optimise recycling and reuse (95%)
  • Adhere to environmental risk management regulations
  • Reduce carbon footprint
  • Install in limited floor space
  • Meet tight installation timeframes ( < 5 months)Vacuum Distillation System

The system has achieved a 95% saving in potable water usage equating to about $50,000 per annum. It has also provided additional benefits including;

  • Zero trade waste costs
  • Reduced administration costs
  • Reduced chemical costs
  • 24/7 automated process

The total project cost was $554,000 with the distillation system being $260,000. The maintenance costs are around $15,000 per annum. The project was fully self funded with a payback on investment of 3 years.
