Using Vacuum Distillation to Recycle Trade Waste
Securency International is a world leader in polymer banknote production with over 30 countries issuing banknotes printed by through their systems.
They undertook a design study to compare vacuum distillation with chemical treatment systems in order to address a trade waste issue they were experiencing. Their trade waste had two streams of concern - the electroplating waste and printing equipment washdown waste.
The Vacuum distillation system was chosen to;
- Optimise recycling and reuse (95%)
- Adhere to environmental risk management regulations
- Reduce carbon footprint
- Install in limited floor space
- Meet tight installation timeframes ( < 5 months)

The system has achieved a 95% saving in potable water usage equating to about $50,000 per annum. It has also provided additional benefits including;
- Zero trade waste costs
- Reduced administration costs
- Reduced chemical costs
- 24/7 automated process
The total project cost was $554,000 with the distillation system being $260,000. The maintenance costs are around $15,000 per annum. The project was fully self funded with a payback on investment of 3 years.
