South Pacific Laundry Pty Ltd

Water Recycling System

South Pacific Laundry (SPL) is a large  commercial laundry operation servicing the hospitality industry across Melbourne and regional Victoria. Their clients include restaurants and major hotels such as Hilton, Crown and Accor properties. The business has grown exponentially over the last few years necessitating major investments in upgrading plant.

In early 2010 SPL initiated a waste water recycling project with the aim of recycling 85% of the waste water generated by the laundry. Water and energy savings were estimated to be around $250,000 per year. By the end of 2010 they had commissioned a Kemco Water Recycling System.This is a two stage filtration process with ceramic mirco filtration followed by reverse osmosis treatment. The system includes a built in water softener and heat exchanger to cool the final waste water down for effluent discharge and to bring up  the fresh top-up water temperature to the recycled water requirement.

Currently SPL are achieving  4.5 litres per kg linen washed and are on target to achieving their next milestone of 2.5 l/kg linen. An average commercial laundry operates at around 12 l/kg linen washed.

SPL Microfiltration SystemFuture plans for water management at the site include:

  • Use of recycled water for the toilets
  • Use of recycled water for prewash and main wash in the dry cleaning department
  • Secondary water supplies for current and newly installed washers and;
  • Optimisation of water supply to the boiler ( by increasing RO capacity.
