Yarra Valley Water together with the Plumbing Industry Commission and the Building Commission are working towards ways of reducing the large amount of water lost during fire service testing.

Fire service testing consumes a large amount of drinking water throughout Victoria every year. The Victorian government is committed to reducing water consumed in maintaining fire services, without compromising safety.

Yarra Valley Water together with the Plumbing Industry Commission and the Building Commission has conducted a project to investigate and demonstrate how to reduce water used when testing the automatic fire sprinkler systems. Changing current practices and equipment for testing the pumps and alarms is the best opportunity for reducing water used by fire services.

The key learnings of the project have been summarised for Yarra Valley Water customers in the Fire Services Water Conservation Program fact sheet. This outlines seven key opportunities to amend systems and testing regimes in order to save large amounts of water.
