Choose Tap this Summer

In a bid to increase awareness of the health and environmental benefits of tap water, Yarra Valley Water has launched it’s “Choose Tap” program, with Hawthorn Football Club star, Sam Mitchell, unveiling a permanent fixture water refill station at Lillydale Lake.

“Choose Tap” aims to promote the benefits of drinking tap water as part of healthy lifestyle and as a positive alternative to bottled water.

More than a billion people worldwide do not have access to safe drinking water - but sometimes in Australia we take our quality tap water for granted.

We spend more than $500 million a year on bottled water, which is not only putting greater strain on the environment, it’s an expense we could easily avoid.

Melburnians are rightly proud of our tap water, which is primarily sourced from protected natural catchments and requires very little treatment before we drink it. As many have discovered after a trip interstate or overseas, our water is great to drink!

Medical experts agree that during summer, people should drink at least 8 glasses of water per day - more if they have been exercising or outdoors. Water is the best source of hydration and is calorie free – and of course it is an absolute bargain compared to any other drink.

So go on, choose tap this summer!

Choose Tap Trivia

  • Did you know? If our brains don’t get enough water, our ability to concentrate can decrease by 13 percent and our short term memory can drop by 7 percent – and just think about how important mental focus is for sporting success

  • People can lose between one and two litres of water an hour in sweat just when doing moderately hard exercise

  • Our bodies are 70 percent water, and staying hydrated is essential for good health and performance in all areas of life from the sporting arena, to the office or the classroom

  • Light-headedness, dizziness and headaches are early signs that we are not getting enough water

  • It can take up to 3 litres of water to produce 1 litre of bottled water

Why would you Choose Tap ?

Water is essential for healthy living and staying hydrated is crucial for sporting mental and academic performances.  Tap water also represents value for money, so it’s cheaper for the community than buying bottled water or other beverages, whether you drink from a tap or refill a water bottle to carry with you.

It’s all about choice.  We want our customers to be informed about the choices they make.  We believe Melbourne’s tap water is amongst the best in the world for quality and taste, it’s a cheaper option for the community, and now water refill stations make it more accessible .

All water supplied in Melbourne easily meets the requirements of the Australian Drinking Water Guidelines and the Safe Drinking Water Act.

Melbourne is fortunate to have high quality drinking water, with the majority drawn from large protected mountain catchments, where no agricultural or human activity is allowed.

Its more environmentally friendly than bottled water.  PET plastic bottles are the main packaging containers used for bottled water.  Australia recycles only 36% of PET plastic drink bottles.  The rest are littered or landfilled.

The charge for 1 litre of bottled water is up to 1,490 times the cost of tap water, over 90% of the cost of a bottle can be traced back to the bottle, lid or label.

In terms of cost, it’s a no brainer – 1 litre of bottled water could typically cost $3 (or more), but for the same price you can refill a one litre bottle from the tap, every day, for over 2.5 years!
