Kinglake West sewerage project
An environmentally friendly sewerage service - National Park Rd and Pine Ridge Rd
As part of a research project aiming to find a more sustainable way of providing sewerage services, 82 properties in the Pine Ridge Road area of Kinglake West (including the southern part of National Park Road) will receive reticulated sewerage services.
In addition, approximately 25 properties are participating in an innovative trial and are having the following on-property components installed:
- Greywater treatment system
- Urine separating toilets and drainage pipework
- Urine storage tank
A Community Information Evening was held on Monday 11 April 2011 at Kinglake West Hall to provide local residents with an update on the project. Representatives from Nubian Water Systems (greywater system supplier), Institute of Sustainable Futures (social research partner) and Select Solutions (on-property works contractor) attended as well as Yarra Valley Water project staff.
Latest News
New Wastewater Treatment Facility
A new treatment facility is required in order to treat wastewater collected from the serviced area. Yarra Valley Water recently purchased a site for this on Burtons Road. The facility will largely be located underground, with an above-ground building housing controls and other equipment. It will produce recycled water which will be reused on the same site.
Yarra Valley Water has applied to the Environment Protection Authority of Victoria for a Works Approval permit to build the facility. Interested people can comment in writing directly to the Environment Protection Authority – see www.epa.vic.gov.au.
Sewerage Reticulation
Construction of the sewer mains in National Park Road and Pine Ridge Road is now complete. The main currently terminates at a temporary eduction point at the treatment facility site.
Properties on National Park Road and Pine Ridge Road are now being connected onto the main to transfer effluent away from the onsite interceptor tanks.
On Property Infrastructure
On-property infrastructure is being installed as people build their homes.
The interceptor tanks are supplied by Innoflow Technologies Limited and are constructed of long lasting, chemical-resistant green fibreglass. Innoflow has a great deal of experience with septic tank effluent pumping systems and has a large number of tanks in operation around the world.
The Nubian GT600 greywater treatment system is a slimline unit that treats greywater using a chemical-free process, and is certified by the Victorian Environment Protection Authority (EPA).

The Institute of Sustainable Futures (ISF) has been engaged by Yarra Valley Water to undertake a study of the practices, attitudes and experiences of users of the urine separating toilets. Thankyou to all who participated in this research; the findings are currently being collated into a report in order to share the project learnings with the rest of the water industry.
