Yarra Valley Water at the Warrandyte Festival 2011North Warrandyte Sewerage backlog program

North Warrandyte is located in Melbourne’s eastern suburbs along the northern banks of the Yarra River, and is approximately 30km from the Central Business District of Melbourne.

Residents of North Warrandyte currently manage their wastewater via onsite systems.  At the beginning of the Sewerage Backlog Program, Nillumbik Shire Council identified approximately 1,050 properties that were unable to contain their wastewater on site all year round.  Some of these properties have since upgraded their systems and now comply with Environment Protection Authority (EPA) Victoria requirements, but many of these properties still discharge uncontained effluent into the Yarra River.

These properties in North Warrandyte are currently scheduled to be serviced by the Sewerage Backlog Program between 2012/13 and 2013/14.  Please be aware that the dates indicated are planned dates only, and may be subject to change.

April 2012: North Warrandyte Options Assessment

From 12 March until 9 April 2012, Yarra Valley Water ran an online forum where North Warrandyte residents and neighbouring communities were invited to view and have their say on the potential wastewater management options for the North Warrandyte Sewerage Backlog Area.

We would like to thank the residents from North Warrandyte and the neighbouring communities for their interest in the project.

The forum is now closed, however the reports prepared for this Options Assessment phase are still available to view and download. Please visit the website at www.yoursayyvw.com.au/northwarrandytebacklog if you would like to view the reports.

Yarra Valley Water will now analyse the responses and comments on the proposed options and provide a summary of the results. The option carried forward into design will consider all feedback received from residents. This information will help Yarra Valley Water to provide the most appropriate sewerage service for the area when considering community, environmental, and financial considerations.

March 2012: Warrandyte Festival

Yarra Valley Water staff recently manned a display at the Warrandyte Festival on 24 and 25 March.  The stall displayed maps, reports, and other useful project information about the North Warrandyte and Warrandyte (south of the Yarra River) Sewerage Backlog Projects.

Our project team members were on hand to speak to local residents about these projects and discuss their questions and concerns. The Yarra Valley Water employees had a great time at the festival and enjoyed the opportunity to speak to residents face to face.  Throughout the weekend, the project team members spoke with more than 100 customers involved with these projects.

January 2012: North Warrandyte Options Assessment

Work on the Options Assessment for the North Warrandyte Sewerage Backlog Area has progressed.  Our consultant, GHD, is on track to complete their Options Assessment project by late February this year.

At the end of this Options Assessment investigation, and through our upcoming consultation with the North Warrandyte community, Yarra Valley Water will have selected a wastewater management option that will be used to service the 1,050 properties in North Warrandyte that have been identified as requiring a sewerage service.

Some of the options that are being considered are:

  • Traditional gravity sewerage system
  • Hybrid pressure gravity sewerage system
  • Onsite greywater reuse
  • STEP/STEG system
  • Recycled water
  • Onsite wastewater treatment plant

Schematics for these options can be viewed under the ‘Related Links’ section of this page.
