Our tree removal policy
Under section 67 of the Water Industry Act 1994 Yarra Valley Water has a legal right to remove trees that obstruct or damage our assets and subsequently disrupt the sewer service of our customers. If the tree or trees are located outside of a defined drainage easement or not over YVW infrastructure, compensation is payable to the property owner.
Not withstanding our legal rights, Yarra Valley Water’s policy is not to remove trees unless no alternative solution is available. This policy is based on the premise of supporting a green environment and the nature of local communities.
Our initial response to the blockage will be to investigate the cause of the stoppage using closed circuit television (CCTV) survey. Based on the review of the CCTV survey and on other relevant details we will determine the optimum path to prevent further blockages.
Our options include:
- Cleaning the pipe
- Repairing part of the pipe
- Replacing the whole length of the pipe
- Relining the pipe or
- As a last resort removing the tree
