While most of the sewage collected by Yarra Valley Water is piped to Melbourne Water’s large treatment plants in Carrum and Werribee approximately 10% is treated at one of our nine sewage treatment plants (STPs).  These STP’s treat sewage under EPA licence to a standard suitable for discharge to the environment.   Discharge may be either to the local receiving waterway or where viable to irrigation schemes supplying golf courses and some agricultural activities.  Approximately 20% of the sewage received by Yarra Valley Water is recycled either internally within our plants or supplied to recycled water customers.

We also operate two recycled water treatment plants which provide additional treatment to enable supply of higher quality “Class A” recycled water to households in Epping and Croydon for toilet flushing, clothes washing and garden watering.

Two new treatment plants are currently under construction.  A recycled water treatment plant is being constructed at the Wallan Sewage Treatment Plant to provide Class A water to new residential developments around Wallan and a Stormwater Treatment Plant is being constructed in Kalkallo to provide recycled water to a new business park under development.
