Understanding recycled water

Firefighting and drought relief

Class A recycled water is a safe and sustainable source of water for fire fighting.

The separate pipe network that carries recycled water has been designed with firefighting in mind and below ground hydrants are identified by purple-coloured covers.

At Aurora, the first housing development to receive Class A recycled water, the Epping CFA is allowed to access recycled water at Aurora for training purposes as well as for fighting fires, reducing the use of valuable drinking water.

Fire services personnel are trained on how access and use Class A recycled water prior to it being made available and adjust their operating procedures as required.

Yarra Valley Water also provides access to recycled water for local councils in our service area to irrigate sporting ovals for the purpose of drought relief and while water restrictions are in place in Melbourne.
