Water usage charges
Yarra Valley Water uses a "three tier step tariff" to charge for water use. This system is designed to encourage customers to become more water efficient.
The word "step" does not relate to your property size, it relates to how many litres of water your home uses per day and the applicable price charged.
2011/2012 Usage charges
Step one | 0 - 440 litres of water per day | $1.7756 per kilolitre |
Step two | 441 - 880 litres of water per day | $2.0832 per kilolitre |
Step three | 881+ litres of water per day | $3.0778 per kilolitre |
Recycled water | All usage | $1.7756 per kilolitre |
Sewage System (sewage disposal) charges
Residential sewage is all the water that goes down the kitchen, laundry and bathroom sinks including the toilet.
The residential sewage disposal charge starting 1 July 2011 is $1.9546 per kilolitre. The charge is applied to an estimated volume of sewage that is disposed into the sewerage system from inside your home.
What does the sewage system charge cover?
The sewage system charge covers the transport, treatment and disposal of sewage, which is an extensive and costly process. Once sewage reaches a treatment plant, any waste products other than domestic sewage must be separated. These waste products must be relocated to a registered waste disposal site. The remaining sewage is treated on site.
Why is the volume of sewage estimated?
It is technically difficult and expensive to have a meter installed in each household to record the volume of sewage discharged. Therefore Yarra Valley Water estimates the volume based on the amount of water supplied to your property (as measured by your existing water meter) minus a percentage of water that we estimate is used outside.
