yarra valley Waterways and drainage charge


The Waterways and Drainage charge is not related to the water and sewerage services you receive from us.

These charges are used by Melbourne Water; as the caretaker of river health, to manage rivers and creeks, the floodplains surrounding rivers and creeks and the regional drainage system.

We bill this charge on behalf of Melbourne water as it is cheaper for the community than Melbourne Water issuing a separate bill.


Major Melbourne Water projects funded by this quarterly charge include:

  • the construction of wetlands to improve the health of Port Phillip Bay
  • riverbank re-vegetation
  • improving habitat for native fish, platypus and frogs
  • managing and improving larger, regional drainage infrastructure
  • flood protection including flood mapping and reducing flood risk
  • infrastructure to service urban growth
  • works to protect and improve water quality through improved storm water management.


The Waterways and drainage charge for property owners in the existing area is based on the Net Annual Value of properties . In 2011/12 the charge has increased by 9%.
