About Yarra Valley Water

As a retail water company, we provide water supply and sewerage services to over 1.5 million people who live and work in the Yarra River catchment area of Melbourne. We began operations on 1 January 1995 following the restructure of Melbourne's water industry in 1994.

We are owned by the State Government of Victoria and operate commercially under a Board of Directors appointed by our shareholder, and are subject to Corporations Law.

Our Operating Licence is issued under the Water Industry Act and covers an area of approximately 4,034 square kilometres of Melbourne's northern and eastern suburbs. Yarra Valley Water owns and maintains 8,643 kms of water main and 8,207 kms of sewerage main.

We are regulated by the Essential Services Commission and compete by comparison with two other retail water companies servicing different parts of Melbourne. For a more detailed map of our service area or click on the map below.

The Regulatory Environment

Being established under the State Owned Enterprises Act 1992, we are subject to Corporations Law. Our water and sewerage licence is issued under the Water Industry Act 1994, with the Licence term from 1 January 1995 to 30 June 2004.

We are subject to regulation by the Essential Services Commission and make payments to the Victorian Government equivalent to the income tax and sales tax which would be payable if the Company was not State owned.

Corporate Governance

Our directors adhere to corporate governance practices based on the Australian Stock Exchange Listing Rules, even though we are not a listed public company and have adopted the Code of Conduct issued by the Australian Institute of Company Directors.
