What is Class A recycled water?

Class A is high quality recycled water produced according to strict guidelines developed by
EPA Victoria and the Department of Health. These high standards are ensured through process control and quality assurance systems including continuous monitoring throughout the treatment facility

Class A recycled water is not intended for human consumption. It is suitable for:

  • Washing clothes
  • Flushing toilets
  • Watering gardens (including vegetables)
  • Washing cars
  • Fighting fires
  • Filling ornamental ponds and water features*

* Water in ponds or water features may need to be changed regularly as algae may grow due to the nutrients in the recycled water.

Class A recycled water is not suitable for:

  • Drinking
  • Cooking, food preparation or other kitchen purposes
  • Bathing and showering
  • Evaporative coolers
  • Filling swimming pools or spas
  • Children's slip and slides and water toys

While Class A recycled water is treated to a high standard, it is not permitted for personal use. If you do accidentally drink it, don't be alarmed, as the likelihood of getting ill is very low. Seek medical advice if there are signs of illness.

When will Class A recycled water be available?

Class A recycled water is now available at Aurora in Epping North and parts of the Highlands Estate in Craigieburn West. The current estimated timing for Class A recycled water becoming available to other areas is:

  • Epping North - Currently available
  • Craigieburn West - Currently available.  New stages in development at Highlands will be rolled out progressively.
  • Beveridge and South Wallan - Late 2011
  • Croydon and Chirnside Park - The Brushy Creek Treatment Plant is operational and
Class A recycled water is currently available for Council use. Supply to new residential developments will be provided as infrastructure is constructed.

Only customers in a Class A recycled area, councils or schools have access to Class A recycled water.
