Environmental Policy

Yarra Valley Water recognises that the well being of our community and the strength of our economy are dependent on the health of our environment.

We strive to provide water and sewerage services within the carrying capacity of nature and will inspire others to do the same.  We will achieve this by reducing:

  • Concentrations of substances that have been extracted from the earth.
  • Concentrations of substances produced by society; and
  • Degradation of nature by physical means.

To assist us achieve our objectives we commit to utilise processes that:

  • Strive to continually improve our environmental performance and prevent pollution.
  • Seek the advice of stakeholders and involve them in setting goals.
  • Annually review our objectives and targets to incorporate the best available information.
  • Publish our policy, goals and progress towards attainment of our objectives.
  • Encourage our staff, contractors, consultants and suppliers working for and on behalf of the organisation to strive for excellence in environmental management
  • Comply with all environmental regulations.

To provide our services within the carrying capacity of nature and inspire others to do the same, we have committed to the following strategic objectives:

  • We run our operations in a way that protects and enhances the waterways we extract from and discharge into.
  • There is improved management of septic tanks and we are on track to complete the sewerage backlog program with sustainable solutions by 2025.
  • We have helped our customers to significantly reduce their per capita potable water conservation.
  • All biosolids produced by Yarra Valley Water sewage treatment plants are used for sustainable, productive purposes and we have helped Melbourne Water to do the same.
  • There are no net greenhouse gas emissions from Yarra Valley Water operations.
  • We are recognised as global leaders in Environmental Sustainability and sought after for advice.
