VIC 1000 Program

Victorian small businesses embrace sustainability in the North

Yarra Valley Water is proud to be a major partner in the VIC 1000 Program, Australia’s largest sustainable business management program. The government-funded program aims to deliver healthier profits while reducing environmental impacts. The program in the Northern region is supported by the Victorian Government’s Sustainability Fund, the Northern Alliance for Greenhouse Action group (NAGA) and delivered by Village Green.

We are looking forward to working with councils and small businesses in the local area to help reduce business’ impact on the environment even further. We also hope that the efforts by these small businesses inspire other businesses, big or small, to assess if they are operating in the most sustainable way possible too.

What is the VIC 1000 Program?

The VIC 1000 project is a 3 year ‘sustainable business management’ pilot program working with 1000 small to medium size enterprises in 5 regions throughout Victoria.

Facilitated by Village Green the program aims to deliver real financial savings to small businesses. Through better understanding of their business operations, participating businesses are empowered to reduce their level of environmental impact, while at the same time saving significant amounts on their operating costs.

For businesses involved, the program runs over 12 months and includes site audits and targeted retrofits, workshops to educate and inspire business owners and staff and on hand assistance, all culminating in reduced environmental impacts and a more educated community.

What are the benefits?

The program anticipates:

  • 15% reduction in waste generation
  • 8% reduction in energy consumption
  • 21% reduction in water consumption
Working with local councils and trader associations, the VIC 1000 program brings benefits to both the businesses and residents of local communities.

Who is involved?

245 small business operators in regions covered by the cities of Hume, Melbourne, Boroondara, Moreland, Whittlesea, Nillumbik, Darebin, Banyule and Manningham are currently participating in the program.
