Water quality Emerald and surrounding areas
We are aware that over the past three to four weeks there have been intermittent water quality issues for some residents in the Emerald, Avonsleigh, Cockatoo and surrounding areas.
Residents have reported experiencing white or milky coloured water coming from their water taps. This white/milky water has been caused by very small air bubbles in the water and cannot do you any harm.
If you are experiencing white or milky coloured water and you have concerns about drinking it, we recommend you take the following step:
- Fill an open container with water and allow it to sit for a few minutes, so the air can be released. Once the air has been dispersed, the water should return to its normal clear state. The water is safe to drink.
If, having taken this step, the water does not become clear, please call us for advice.
Your questions answered
Why has this happened?
During maintenance works in our water supply network, air got into the large water pipes that service the area. This is an unusual occurrence, with the aerated water taking longer than expected to move through our supply system.
What are we doing to resolve the issue?
We have been working hard to resolve the issue so the appearance of your water supply returns to normal as quickly as possible.
Our operational staff have been flushing our water mains at strategic locations throughout the area to help move the air out of the pipes. This can take some time and intermittent cloudy/milky water may persist for the next few weeks.
Where can you get more information?
You can find more information about cloudy/milky water on our water quality issues page.
