Surrey Hills Water Tower Rehabilitation Project

We’ve completed work to rehabilitate the Surrey Hills water tower, extending its life and making it safe for people working at the reservoir.

Located near the intersection of Elgar and Canterbury roads the Surrey Hills water tower, built in 1929, is heritage-listed with Whitehorse City Council. Our remediation work will extend the life of the tower by at least 25 years. The tower is no longer used for water storage.

The work was completed by concrete remediation specialists, Duratec. They started work in December 2021 and were completed by June 2022.

WHAT WAS INVOLVED

• Installing scaffolding to contain the dust and reduce the risk of concrete or equipment falling from height
• Repairing and replacing concrete, including colour matching
• Applying an anti-carbonation coating to the tower to slow down future corrosion
• Removing rust from the steel ladder and applying a protective coating.

As the construction crew worked at height, there was encapsulated scaffolding around the tower. This reduced the risk of concrete and/or construction equipment falling to the ground and it contained the dust and shot blast residues. 

The crew accessed the construction site from the Elgar Road entrance to Melbourne Water's reservoir.

We worked to the latest State Government advice, had COVIDSafe plans in place and followed safe work practices in line with public health directions.
