Environmental initiatives - leading by example
Nutrient cap imposed
Became the first Australian water utility to self-impose a nutrient cap on our waste water output, to protect local waterways and the health of Port Phillip Bay.
Expanding the recycled water network
Built on the provision of recycled water at the Aurora Estate in Epping, by expanding the recycled water network to service the growing Hume corridor. As part of this, we commenced the supply of Class A recycled water to around 600 homes in Highlands Estate at Craigieburn West.
Victoria first for sewerage servicing
Commenced an innovative, Victorian first sewerage servicing project in Kinglake West to find more environmentally sustainable ways to service small, remote communities. It includes using a Septic Tank Effluent Pressure (STEP) reticulation network to collect household sewage for irrigation, on-property greywater treatment systems to provide additional non-drinking water for household use, and urine diverting toilets in homes. The urine will be collected for reuse as fertiliser in an agricultural trial.
Working to eliminate sewer overflows
Continued work ahead of schedule and under budget on the five-year, $650 million Northern Sewerage Project. When complete it will service growth in Melbourne’s northern suburbs and improve water quality in local waterways, and ultimately the Yarra River, by virtually eliminating sewer overflows during wet weather.
Award winning project
Won the ‘Master Planning and Design category’ of the 2009 Victorian Stormwater Excellence Awards for our innovative Kalkallo Stormwater Harvesting and Reuse Project – a project of international significance that has received a Federal Government grant of almost $10 million.
Modernising sewerage services
Made modern sewerage reticulation available to a Further 261 homes that use septic tanks, while 259 properties in our service area decommissioned septic tanks and connected to the sewerage system.
