Australian Paper Mill Rising Sewer Main

We’re decommissioning an old, unused 2.2 km section of sewer main, built in 1967 to service the old Australian Paper Mill in Alphington.

What are we doing?

  • We’re filling the old, unused sewer pipe with ‘grout’ that fills in and sets in the pipe.
  • The sewer pipe doesn’t have maintenance holes, so we’ll have to excavate 10 access shafts at intervals along the pipe to do the work.
  • This method of decommissioning meets our asset management standards and the Water Services Association of Australia guidelines.

The pipeline extends from Rex Avenue Alphington to Yarra Bend Road, Fairfield and is located within roadways and parklands and under private property.

When will the works take place?

Works are scheduled to start in July 2024 and will take place between 7 am and 5 pm, Monday to Friday.

Each section will take approximately 2 weeks to dig, grout and then reinstate. We’ll work progressively along the pipe path from east to west.

We expect the works to be completed in 4-6 months.

Restoration of work areas

We’ll restore work areas as close as possible to the condition they were in before these works, and meeting Council standards.

Some temporary reinstatement may be necessary, e.g. cold mix asphalt, but we will come back when all works are finished to properly reinstate.
