Trade Waste Application
All businesses creating trade waste that is being discharged into the sewer need to have a Trade Waste Agreement.
Construction project
This application is for developers, construction companies and other parties wanting to discharge groundwater and/or stormwater into the sewerage system during a site construction phase.
You’ll need to supply information that supports your application as well as evidence of how groundwater and/or stormwater will be managed post-construction with the form before we can start processing your submission.
We’ll respond to your application within 10 business days.
If we require further information or changes to your application, we’ll contact you.
If we approve your application to discharge groundwater and/or stormwater during construction, we’ll also conduct a site inspection before you can start discharging from your site.

Food businesses
For businesses including cafes, restaurants, take away shops, delicatessens, butchers and similar business types.

Industrial
All businesses creating trade waste that is being discharged into the sewer need to have a Trade Waste Agreement. This includes food manufacturers, metal finishes, car washes, printers, laundries, chemical manufacturers and similar business types.
You can apply for a Trade Waste Agreement by downloading and completing an Industrial Trade Waste application form.
In addition to your completed Trade Waste Application form, you also need to include:
- a diagram of the Trade Waste pre-discharge treatment system (if applicable)
- a technical specification of the treatment system (if applicable)
- a list of chemicals that will be discharged including Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS)

Types of agreements
Yarra Valley Water has a different type of Trade Waste Agreement for each category of customer. The fees and charges you will need to pay as part of your agreement will depend on the type of business you have.

Minor Trade Waste Agreements
Minor Trade Waste agreements apply to businesses discharging small quantities of Trade Waste which is of a similar nature to domestic sewage. Businesses classified as discharging minor trade waste may change over time at the discretion of Yarra Valley Water.
If your business type is not contained in the table below and your business produces “Trade Waste”, you must apply for a Trade Waste Agreement with Yarra Valley Water.

Minor Trade Waste Agreement
Yarra Valley Water agrees to accept Trade Waste from your business subject to the following conditions:
- You must only discharge small quantities of Trade Waste which is of a similar nature to domestic sewage to the sewerage system.
- You must advise Yarra Valley Water immediately if your business type and/or Trade Waste discharge is no longer small quantities which is of a similar nature to domestic sewage.
- You must allow Yarra Valley Water access to the business premises at any reasonable time, but in an emergency anytime, to:
- measure Trade Waste flow; or
- take and analyse samples of any Trade Waste; or
- inspect any fittings or works on fittings used to convey the Trade Waste to the sewer.
- You may be required to stop discharging Trade Waste while Yarra Valley Water inspect, maintain, alter or repair the sewerage network if there is a risk to health, safety or the environment.
- If requested by Yarra Valley Water, you and/or any person must supply information to Yarra Valley Water relating to your Trade Waste or any matter used or produced in a process involving your Trade Waste.
- Nothing in this Minor Trade Waste Agreement shall affect, restrict or limit the rights of Yarra Valley Water under the Water Industry Act 1994, the Water Act 1989 and any Regulations and Codes made under these Acts.
