Fire services

Fire services are required on most industrial and commercial properties and some larger residential properties for fire protection purposes.

They are privately owned and maintained assets and it is essential that they operate effectively in an emergency situation.

A fire service includes all pipe work and assets into a property excluding the stop valve on the Yarra Valley Water main and the water meter (where fitted).

Fire protection typically includes one or a combination of:

  • Fire hydrants (for use by a fire brigade)
  • Hose reels
  • Automatic fire sprinkler systems.

Private fire hydrants and hose reels are collectively known as ‘fire services’.

In some cases, smaller sites have both a fire and drinking water supply through a single shared pipeline and meter. These are commonly called ‘combined fire and general services’.
