Pricing update 2026-2027

Water prices are adjusted each year to reflect the costs of managing our reliable water and sewer network.

From 1 July 2026, prices will increase by 5.7%. For a typical household, that’s about $16 more per quarter.

This increase reflects inflation and the cost of ordering 150 billion litres of desalinated water to meet the needs of our community.

Securing water for the future

Melbourne is becoming warmer and drier our water storages aren't refilling like they used to.

As our climate continues to change and Melbourne grows, we need a mix of solutions to keep water flowing.

To help protect our drinking water supplies, we’re investing in other water sources, including recycled water, desalinated water and stormwater harvesting.

Desalinated water from the Victorian Desalination Plant in Wonthaggi is one part of Melbourne’s water supply.

Unlike rainwater, desalinated water doesn’t depend on the weather. It can provide a reliable supply during long dry periods.

Desalinated water plays an important role by helping us:

  • Keep water supplies reliable
  • Support a growing Melbourne
  • Reducing the risk of severe restrictions
  • Plan for the future.

The plant was built following the Millennium Drought to help protect Melbourne from future water storages, ensuring there’s enough water for everyone.

We all have a role to play to protect our precious drinking water. It’s the everyday water-saving habits at home – from the backyard to the bathroom – that collectively help us conserve our water supplies.
