Vehicle Backflow Device Testing
Backflow prevention
A backflow prevention device stops potentially contaminated water being drawn back into the water supply network. The device is vital in ensuring that we continue to supply safe, high quality drinking water to your business and the wider community.
As a minimum your vehicle must have one of the following devices installed:
- A Registered Air Gap, or
- A Reduced Pressure Zone Device (RPZD)
A Registered Air Gap must meet the following requirements:
The vertical space between the water outlet of the pipe and the flood level of the tank must be 2x the pipe diameter.
e.g. If the pipe diameter is 50mm, the vertical space or ‘air gap’ must be a minimum of 100mm.

Reduced Pressure Zone Device (RPZD)
A Reduced Pressure Zone Device (RPZD) is a valve that allows water to flow in one direction only. The device can be mounted to the water truck at the inlet pipe, or if preferred can be fitted to a portable assembly.

Backflow Device Testing
Each vehicle and backflow prevention device are required to undergo inspection by an accredited backflow plumber each year to ensure compliance with the conditions of your permit.
Once inspected, your plumber will provide you with a report which is to be supplied to Yarra Valley Water annually.
