Target 150
Thanks to your efforts, we’re already using 22% less water than we were a decade ago – an incredible achievement. But with a growing population and drier conditions, water demand is expected to exceed supply in many areas of Victoria within the decade. So, it’s as important as ever that we keep up the good work.
In 2024–25, Melbourne’s average residential water use was 169 litres per person per day – slightly up from 163 litres the year before. Every litre we save today helps secure our water supplies so there is enough for everyone, for generations to come.
How to get involved
Target 150 is a shared goal and a simple reminder to use water more efficiently every day. You can check how you’re tracking by looking at your average daily water use on your water bill and comparing it to the 150 litres per person target.
If your water usage is a little high, take a look at our Saving Water web page for tips on ways to save.
Everyone has a role to play
Melbourne’s growing population means we must manage both the demand and supply of water. While the Victorian Desalination Plant supports our future water supply, everyday water-saving actions help keep demand in check. Households account for a large share of Melbourne’s water use, so saving water at home really matters. Many of us are also using alternative sources like rainwater, stormwater, and recycled water in our homes, schools, businesses, and communities.
