M47 Water Main Renewal Project

We’re replacing a section of water main in Toorak Road, known as the M47 water main. This water main is almost 100 years old and beyond its service life.

Old water mains can burst or leak so replacing it now means we can reliably supply drinking water to more than 9,000 customers in Kooyong and Malvern.

The new water main will be constructed from the intersection of Toorak Road and Talbot Crescent to the right-turn lanes onto the Monash Freeway, outbound.

We have appointed Kaycee Excavations as our Project Partner.

Subject to receiving final permits and approvals, we expect to start works in late March 2021 and take seven weeks to complete.

We will provide you with more information when details have been finalised. Please check your letterbox for our updates.

We don’t expect there’ll be any interruption to your water during these works.

  • May 2021 - Night works information

As we progress our work to replace the existing water main, there will be traffic impacts for motorists travelling along Toorak Road.

    NIGHTWORK - MONDAY 10 TO THURSDAY 13 MAY 2021

We will be working at night from 8pm to 6am, Monday 10 May to Thursday 13 May 2021, installing pipes across the citybound onramp to the Monash Freeway and the adjacent eastbound lane along Toorak Road. This work is being completed at night to minimise disruption to traffic. The road will be open to traffic during the day.

Traffic along Toorak Road will be diverted away from our construction zone.

Please try to avoid this area - or allow additional travel time. We apologise for any inconvenience.

    SATURDAY 15 & SUNDAY 16 MAY 2021

We will be working in Toorak Road at one of the outbound onramp lanes to the Monash Freeway and the adjacent eastbound lane from 6am on Saturday 15 May 2021 to 7pm on Sunday 16 May 2021.

If possible, please avoid this construction zone or allow additional travel time. We apologise for any inconvenience.

Once we have installed and connected this final section of pipe, we need to test and commission the pipeline.

We plan to restore the open space, under the rail bridge, from 19 to 28 May 2021. This will be completed during daylight hours.

We don’t expect there’ll be any interruption to your water during these works.

From Monday 26 April to Thursday 29 April 2021, we’ll be working at the intersection of Talbot Crescent and Toorak Road at night, from 8pm to 6am.

During these hours only, the intersection of Talbot Crescent and Toorak Road will be closed in both directions. There will be no entry into Talbot Crescent from Toorak Road and no exit from Talbot Crescent to Toorak Road.

Please try to avoid this construction zone - or allow additional travel time. We apologise for any inconvenience.

    What we’ve been doing

Since mid-March we’ve been investigating services along the pipeline alignment and installing new pipes within the road reserve, under the rail bridge.

    What to expect next

To connect the new pipes to the existing supply network, we will be working in Toorak Road, at night.

From 7am on Saturday 1 May to 7pm on Sunday 2 May 2021, we’ll be working in two middle lanes of Toorak Road. Some traffic will be diverted as we’ll be working in:
    • one of the right-hand turning lanes to the Monash Freeway outbound
    • one through lane for motorists travelling east.

Other lanes will remain open. See the aerial map below.

Once we’ve connected the pipes, we will test and commission the water supply service. We will restore the road reserve. We expect to complete construction by mid-June 2021.

We don’t expect any interruption to your water service during these works.
