Schools Water Efficiency Program (SWEP)

Find leaks, save water and promote water education in your school.

The Schools Water Efficiency Program (SWEP) is a Victorian Government initiative that enables schools to track their water usage in real time, picking up any spikes in usage caused by damaged pipes, leaks faulty equipment or taps that have been left on.

SWEP has registered over 1500 schools in Victoria since it started in 2012 - that's more than half of all schools. The program has helped these schools save over 11 billion litres of water at an estimated avoided cost of more than $39.1 million. The savings come from finding and fixing leaks early and identifying faulty appliances and inefficient practices that schools can change.

Schools receive up to 2 free data loggers which monitor daily water use in 15 minute intervals. If any water use over 100L is detected at midnight, participating schools will receive an email alert the next day. This data is also displayed in the SWEP online portal, allowing schools to better able to understand their water use and identify faults or leaks that may not have been recognised as quickly, or at all.

Participating schools also receive access to a suite of free educational resources, designed in line with the Victorian curriculum, which utilise the SWEP portal and daily water usage data to integrate sustainability and conservation studies into maths and science classrooms.
