How a career change led to the right fit
By Levi Gluyas, Retail Services Trainer
As a Retail Services Trainer, I support the development and training of new staff and upskilling current staff.
And while I’ve helped people improve their skills for many years, I walked an unconventional route to Yarra Valley Water’s doors.
A new career path
Before Covid I was a full-time tennis coach, so it’s been a bit of a switch.
When lockdowns hit, I was lucky enough to come to Yarra Valley Water as a casual Data and Drawings Integrity Officer within Distribution Services. I loved the workplace culture and environment that Yarra Valley Water offered and knew this was a place I wanted to end up in.
When restrictions eased, I did go back to tennis coaching, but it wasn’t long before I was ready for a change. I came back here and it’s one of the best decisions I’ve made.
Opportunities to grow and develop
I returned to Yarra Valley Water as a Customer Care Consultant and was seconded to a Case Manager role in Retail Services, before moving into my current trainer position. As a lifelong devotee to personal improvement, the chance to explore variety in my work has been invaluable.
Yarra Valley Water has been fantastic in allowing me to participate in growth and development opportunities towards my goals.
Through secondments and different training courses I’ve had the opportunity to further my personal growth in the training and leadership space and then put that into action through my role.
A better work-life balance
Swapping the tennis court for the training space has had a positive impact in other ways.
Prior to coming here, my normal workday would be 8 am - 8 pm out of the house.
The hybrid working environment, not to mention the stable hours, have had a positive impact on my work-life balance and enabled me to have more time back in my week.
That flexibility and the amazing culture is one of the main reasons I wanted to come back.
Everyone here just wants you to succeed, and that’s a great environment to be around.
Team support is vital for success
With innovation and change a constant across the business, the support of my team is vital to ensuring we’re continually delivering great outcomes for our staff and customers.
We foster a creative environment which enables us to share knowledge and accept change.
We’re such a supportive team. It helps keep us on track when there may be conflicting timelines.
Our team is creating and facilitating training for our consultants so we’re prepared for any customer queries which may come through, and having this training available ensures our consultants are ready, and customers can have their questions answered.
