Helping colleagues achieve their potential
By Nichola Tranter, Learning Lead in the Delivery Performance and Partnerships Division
I created an induction program to help new starters feel part of the team, and development plans to support people as they progressed in their roles.
The induction program includes what our new starters need to know to do their job but there’s also a focus on how they’re going.
It’s checking in with them at the end of each week to make sure they’re feeling like they’re part of the team and learning and growing as time goes on.
Encouraging development in other areas
The development plans I established aren’t just about the job someone is doing now – they’re designed to help people build skills for what’s next.
I love seeing others succeed – whether it’s grasping a new concept or moving on to a new role – and I get a lot of joy from this.
A career that’s evolved over time
I didn’t expect to stay at Yarra Valley Water long when I first joined – but that quickly changed.
Once I started working here, I realised the people, culture and overall organisation is a perfect fit for my values – I’ve never considered working anywhere else since.
From Customer Care to leadership
I started in Customer Care handling billings and faults calls, then moved into a training support role in the Service Experience Team before leading the training and customer interaction quality functions within Service Response.
I’m now Learning Lead in the Delivery Performance and Partnerships Division, supporting capability growth and ongoing development of everyone in the Asset Services group.
Learning through every opportunity
I’ve taken on many secondment opportunities and see every role as a chance to grow.
Each secondment and acting role has enabled me to learn more about the business, get to know more of our people and build on my own skills.
I’ve also been able to bring that learning back to my substantive team and role, meaning we can adjust our approach if needed to improve our ways of working.
Building a supportive culture
I believe you get back what you put in.
We all want to feel supported, encouraged, and important.
A business putting in the effort to make sure their people feel valued in this way is going to get great results, from employees as well as customers – so it’s worth putting in the effort to make it a positive experience.
Being part of culture that recognises our efforts and supports each other makes me happy to come to work each day.
