Finding purpose in new pathways

By Darcy Lee, Senior System Analyst

When I started at Yarra Valley Water nearly 10 years ago, I didn't know where my career was headed. Since then, I've built a career shaped by curousity, collaboration and a desire to make a positive impact, by saying yes to opportunities as they've come along.

I’m a senior system analyst in Customer Transformation and Technology. I work in system enhancement and innovation, improving customer journeys and making processes easier for frontline teams.

I hadn’t planned a career in water.

Before joining Yarra Valley Water, I worked at a music store and was trying to break into the music industry. I was doing internship after internship, often unpaid, and unsure where I was heading.

When I started here, I realised I hadn’t just found a job. I’d found a career.

Development and growth

I began as a faults consultant, then moved into billing enquiries and Contact Centre Operations. Earlier this year, I joined the Service Futures Group.

Along the way, I stepped into acting leadership roles and took on opportunities that helped me continue learning and growing.

At Yarra Valley Water, I’ve been able to build on the skills I brought with me and apply them in new ways.

Through different roles and projects, I’ve learned how to juggle competing priorities, work with a wide range of people and build strong relationships. These experiences have shaped how I work and continue to support my development.

A culture that helps you thrive

When I talk about Yarra Valley Water with family and friends, I keep it simple. It’s a place that genuinely cares about its customers, the environment and its people.

Flexibility has been a big part of my growth. It’s helped me find the work‑life balance many of us are looking for.

Working here has also helped me grow in ways I didn’t expect.

Before joining, I felt a bit unsure about what I wanted to do in life. Over time, I’ve discovered my strengths, challenged myself in a supportive environment and developed skills I didn’t even know I needed.

Proud moments

Being named the 2023 AusContact State Workforce Management Professional of the Year was a huge moment for me, particularly because my colleagues nominated me.

I also played a key role in migrating our telephony system to the cloud. Using my frontline experience, I helped design and set up the new platform.

More recently, I contributed to the Multi‑Factor Authentication project. It was complex and high‑pressure, and relied on teamwork, patience and a lot of testing.

We trusted each other, stayed focused on the outcome and worked through challenges together.

I love collaborating with others. I’m driven by the positive impact I can make, whether that starts with a small conversation or leads to solving a bigger problem.

That’s what really fills my bucket.
