Class B recycled water and your business
We are now taking expressions of interest from customers who would like to connect to Class B recycled water from our Whittlesea Sewerage Treatment Plant
Yarra Valley Water is committed to supporting thriving sustainable communities and local economies. Our Whittlesea plant plays a role in this vision by producing Class B recycled water, which has a range of safe uses from agriculture to industrial washdown. As a climate-independent resource, it is a more reliable option for irrigation during dry periods.
Connecting your property to our system is an easy way to save costs and preserve precious drinking water, while returning nutrients to the land. Our team of engineers can work closely with you to set up a connection that meets the water needs of your property.
Use of Class B recycled water
Class B recycled water has a wide range of uses, including:
- Maintenance of green space such as gardens, parks and golf courses
- Grazing fodder/pasture (excluding pigs)
- Irrigation of non-food crops such as woodlots and turf
- Irrigation of food crops that are cooked/processed or select crops that are not directly exposed to reclaimed water such as fruit trees where crop is at least one metre from the ground
- Industrial washdown
- It is not suitable for household use
To understand risks to human health, livestock or the environment, we assess the potential recycled water use of all properties.

Class B Recycled Water Agreement
An agreement with us will be required to use Class B recycled water. We will work with the property occupier to develop and submit an Environmental Improvement Plan (EIP), which forms part of the agreement. The EIP is a risk management plan that covers impacts on human health, the environment and livestock from the use of Class B recycled water.
