Turning data into meaningful insights
Brianna Wilcox, Reporting Transition Lead
Building a career at YVW
Yarra Valley Water was my first 'real' job. I started in Customer Care, then worked in Complaints, the Water Care support team, and rostering/operations.
Originally, I was looking for a temporary role, but here I am, 14 years later!
My interest in data started when I was a Resource Optimisation Specialist, helping make sure customers could connect with our consultants when they needed support.
Being able to see in real time the impacts of planning was so rewarding and I was only able to do that with data. From there my interest grew and my managers were always so supportive in helping me learn and grow.
Building connections with flexible working
I love that I can pick and choose where I work and how I work. Coming into office helps me build connection with office hallway chats and team lunches. At home I can focus and work on tasks that need deep attention.
I've been fortunate to have leaders who have always encouraged my learning and development. The skills I've gained have helped me support my team and share what I've learned with others.
I love being in Yarra Professionals – they are always putting on great lunch and learn sessions that add so much value and give me insights to other areas of the business.
Achieve with pride
I'm proud of being nominated by my peers for the Auscontact Awards – Business Analyst/Reporting Professional of the Year, two years in a row. It’s so special and a privilege to have your work recognised by your colleagues.
There are so many opportunities and secondments available at YVW, and I've been fortunate to take on a few of them. Each experience has helped me better understand the business and, most of all, build strong relationships and friendships across YVW.
Be the change
YVW fosters an environment of bringing new ideas to the table and no idea is off limits – it’s one of the reasons I love working here. My old boss Robert once said, ‘even if an idea isn’t usable right now, always keep it on a shelf because chances are it’ll be useful in the future’. That’s something that’s always stuck with me. For me, new ideas are usually in the form of a report or dashboard which I hope are helpful!
People first
For me, people first is the value I connect with most. Our customers and community are at the heart of everything we do, but it also extends to the people I work with every day. Whether I'm building reporting or supporting a colleague, I always think about how I can make their experience better.
When I'm building a report, I always think about how people will use it. Does it make sense? Is it relevant? Does it add value?
Thinking about people first, helps me focus on those important questions.
We are a data-rich organisation and I enjoy turning data into meaningful stories. Good data helps our people make better decisions, which ultimately benefits our customers and community.
Quick 5
How much water do you drink a day?
2 litres.
Do you prefer still or sparkling water?
Sparkling.
What’s something you’re passionate about outside of work?
I love learning and playing the harp.
What is your highlight from the past year?
Starting to work in Asset Services and seeing and learning what we do out in the field has been very eye opening coming from retail services and being customer focused. It’s been great to get a broader idea of what we do behind the scenes.
What is your dream water-based holiday destination, and why?
I would love to visit Uluru while it is raining or just afterwards. Seeing the wet season desert flowers would be a real treat.
