Aitken Boulevard North Water Project

We constructed new water pipes in Mickleham to ensure future residential developments in Melbourne’s northern suburbs can receive a reliable supply of drinking water and recycled water.

Project details

We constructed two new water supply pipelines from Mt Ridley Road to Donnybrook Road Mickleham, approximately 3kms, using 40cm diameter pipes. We also constructed an access road within an easement for our ongoing maintenance purposes.

These pipelines are an important part of the distribution network, supplying drinking water and recycled water to new developments in Melbourne’s fast-growing northern suburbs.

Construction began October 2018 and was completed by mid-2019.

The new pipelines were located within land owned by developers and council. This alignment was designed to avoid the Mount Ridley Nature Conservation Reserve and other sensitive environmental areas.

Protecting the environment

We've created management plans to control environmental impact, in accordance with the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act. These were implemented prior to construction commencing.

  • Offset Management Plan – We minimised our construction area where possible, however the need to dig trenches to lay the water pipes meant that some native grassland was damaged. To offset this, we negotiated the purchase of Offsets to protect similar grassland elsewhere in Victoria.

  • Striped Legless Lizard Management Plan – We carried out a survey in the area for Striped Legless Lizards, a threatened species. None were located.

  • Matted Flax Lily Salvage and Translocation Plan – We identified and relocated several endangered Matted Flax Lily plants from the construction area.
