Building on the strong results of its trial phase, Yarra Valley Water is continuing its phased upgrade across its network, with around 900,000 digital meters due to be installed by mid-2032.

Yarra Valley Water’s digital meters have already helped resolve over 8,500 leaks, saving 250 megalitres of water - the equivalent of 96 Olympic sized swimming pools.

For Yarra Valley Water customer Simon, from Reservoir, his digital meter delivered an early and welcome benefit.

“After receiving a leak detection alert from Yarra Valley Water, I was able to quickly call a plumber, who found a hidden underground leak and fixed it, saving more than 100,000 litres of water that would have otherwise been lost,” he said.

“This automatic leak detection is a brilliant use of technology, and I commend Yarra Valley Water for using digital meters to deliver real, timely benefits for customers and the environment.”

Yarra Valley Water Managing Director Natalie Foeng said positive customer experiences like Simon’s demonstrate why the organisation is now moving confidently into roll-out.

“This is one of the most significant technology upgrades to our water network in decades, and it’s already delivering real value for customers,” Ms Foeng said.

“Digital meters give customers access to daily water‑use information, helping them play an active role in managing their water, reducing waste and avoiding bill shock.”

“Our leak detection alerts mean customers no longer have to wait for their bill to discover a hidden leak. As soon as we detect unusual water use, we let them know so they can act quickly, saving water and money.”

“With a hot, drying climate placing added pressure on our water supplies, digital metering is an important step towards securing a more resilient water future for our communities.”

Yarra Valley Water has partnered with Sagemcom and New Plumbing Solutions (NPS) to deliver the upgrade and supported employment provider cape for testing, logistics, shipping and storage.

Digital meters have already been installed in Box Hill North, Glen Waverley, Reservoir and Vermont South, with installation currently underway in Monbulk and Glenroy. The program is set to expand into Whittlesea, Hume, Darebin, Merri-Bek and Nillumbik later this year.
