Yarra Valley Water launches Women in STEM program to tackle gender gap

Students at Yarra Valley Water's inaugural STEM Work Experience Program.

Yarra Valley Water has launched a new work experience program seeking to address the under-representation of women in Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).

The STEM Work Experience Program offers students the chance to get first-hand experience of careers in the water industry by shadowing engineers, IT specialists, surveyors and other STEM professionals.

A successful pilot program in July saw seven Year 10 students from Mullauna College enjoy a week-long placement at Yarra Valley Water, participating in site visits and hands-on activities designed to showcase real-world STEM roles.

Yarra Valley Water Sewer Operations Specialist Engineer Dr Bronwyn Herron said she was delighted to provide the opportunity to students and increase visibility of STEM careers at a critical point in their education.

“We know that a lot of young women don’t pursue STEM careers even when they excel in classes related to the field. Providing opportunities like the STEM Work Experience Program is a great way to introduce students to opportunities in the water industry and how meaningful a career here can be,” she said.

“It also helps students decide if a STEM career is something they would like to pursue further as they select their VCE subjects.

“We’re really pleased with how the pilot ran and are looking forward to opening the door to more students in the future.”

Mullauna College Careers Coordinator Nik Smith said the work placement had been an eye-opening experience for the students who attended.

“We want to offer our students every opportunity to explore the career pathways that interest them,” he said.

“The STEM Work Experience Program has been a fantastic way of doing this, and the feedback we’ve gotten from the students who were part of it has been really positive.

“It’s great to see them excited for what their careers may hold.”

Following the success of the pilot, Yarra Valley Water will be expanding the STEM Work Experience Program and is encouraging other schools to take part.
