Calling all water heroes: this year’s National Water Week poster competition is open
Students from Melbourne’s North and East are being encouraged to create a poster with the theme of Water Heroes: Save Every Drop. The winners will be announced in October and go into a statewide competition, with the ultimate winners revealed during National Water Week 20-26 October 2025.
Yarra Valley Water General Manager Strategy and Community Ms Tiffany White said this is a fun-filled, educational opportunity for kindergartens and primary schools to get creative about water conservation.
“The poster competition is a great way for children and teachers across our service area to explore where water comes from and why it’s so important to use water wisely,” Ms White said.
“It’s part of our broader commitment to helping young people develop lifelong water-saving habits through creative and curriculum-aligned education,” she said.
“This year’s theme of Water Heroes: Save Every Drop will help spark fresh ideas about saving water. It’s a chance to showcase students’ creativity, with dedicated resources and ideas to help teachers and students to kick off their poster creations on the National Water Week website.”
The poster competition is open to all primary schools and pre-schools across Victoria, with prizes for individuals and schools for each of the following categories:
- Early Learning / Kindergarten (individual and collaborative entries)
- Prep (individual entries)
- Years 1-2 (individual entries)
- Years 3-4 (individual entries)
- Years 5-6 (individual entries).
Posters can be created by drawing, painting or by using other materials including digital technology to create an A3 or A4 sized poster.
Entries close 5pm on 12 September 2025.
- 1st prize - $150 gift card
- 2nd prize - $100 gift card
- 3rd prize - $75 gift card.
All participating schools enter a random draw to win a free 3-year Schools Water Efficiency Program (SWEP) membership valued at up to $450. This includes installing data loggers to track the school's water use in real time and email alerts to help find and fix leaks.
SWEP schools also receive access to a suite of educational resources designed in line with the Australian and Victorian Curriculum surrounding water conservation and sustainability.
Local winners from the Yarra Valley Water service area will be announced in October and first prize winners from each category will proceed to the state competition. Ultimate winners will be announced during National Water Week, 20-26 October, by the Minister for Water, The Hon Gayle Tierney MLC.
Judges will look closely at each entry and winners will be chosen by deciding:
- how well does the poster communicate the National Water Week poster competition theme, ‘Water Heroes: Save Every Drop' and/or relevant water-related issues
- how attractive does it look from a distance
- how effective art materials been used
- how well the poster uses innovative imagery, design or concepts
