Major sewage treatment plant upgrade underway, securing reliable services for Healesville community

After nearly 40 years of service, the existing treatment plant is being replaced with a modern facility that will continue delivering reliable sewer services for the community while enhancing environmental outcomes for generations to come.
Once complete, the upgraded plant will provide greater resilience and reliability for Healesville's sewer network and improve the plant's ability to manage wet weather events, reducing the risk of impacts to local waterways.
Treatment capacity will increase by almost 80%, from around 1.4 million litres a day to 2.5 million litres.
Yarra Valley Water Deputy General Manager Asset Delivery and Care, Simon Willis, said the project was an important investment in the future of the Healesville community.
"Reliable sewer services are something our customers depend on every day, and this upgrade will ensure homes and businesses continue to receive a safe and resilient service," Mr Willis said.
“This is an important opportunity to renew an essential piece of infrastructure and make sure the treatment plant is ready to meet the needs of Healesville and its surrounds well into the future.”
Yarra Valley Water has appointed BMD Constructions as the project's design and construction partner, with early works now underway to prepare the site for the first stage of the upgrade.
BMD Constructions General Manager Southern Region Antony Damiani said the project would draw on BMD’s proven collaborative approach.
“The team has already made a strong start on site, bringing extensive experience in complex water and wastewater infrastructure. We’re working closely with Yarra Valley Water to deliver the project safely and with certainty,” Mr Damiani said.
The upgraded facility will be designed to support the region through to 2056, incorporating climate resilient design principles and opportunities to improve sustainability outcomes through initiatives such as renewable energy, water reuse and the use of recycled materials.
The existing treatment plant will continue operating throughout the upgrade, ensuring reliable sewer services are maintained for customers while the new facility is built.
