Major Sewer Upgraded to Support Wollert’s Growth

Yarra Valley Water has completed construction of its $20 million Love Branch Sewer in Wollert, delivering essential infrastructure to support one of Melbourne’s fastest growing corridors.

More than 20,000 existing and future properties will benefit from the upgrade, including homes in the Aurora and Rathdowne estates and residents of the Woodlea Lifestyle retirement community.

Delivered in partnership with MFJ Constructions, the project involved constructing and connecting a new two kilometre gravity sewer to Yarra Valley Water’s existing network.

The new sewer runs alongside the Hume Freeway and crosses beneath Craigieburn Road East near the entrance to Yarra Valley Water’s Aurora ReWaste site, linking the Aurora Estate and the existing Curly Sedge Branch Sewer to the broader network.

Yarra Valley Water Deputy General Manager Asset Delivery and Care, Simon Willis said the project strengthens the network and supports the area’s continued growth.

“This upgrade provides the sewerage capacity needed to support Wollert’s rapid growth and ensures our network remains reliable for the community,” Mr Willis said.

“Completing the Love Branch Sewer also means we can safely retire temporary infrastructure that has supported the area until now, delivering a more efficient long term solution for customers.”

The project incorporated several sustainability measures to reduce waste and truck movements and improve construction efficiency. Drill slurry from micro tunnelling was dried on site, mixed with clean fill and reused as backfill, while repurposed crushed rock was used to construct access tracks and trench works.

The team also worked to minimise community impacts by maintaining safe pedestrian and cyclist access along the Galada Tamboore shared path throughout construction.

“As Wollert continues to grow and evolve, this sewer will play an important role in supporting the community’s needs for decades. It’s a lasting investment in the region’s future,” Mr Willis said.
