Sewerage Pumping Station Switchboard Upgrade Program
Currently, there are almost 90 sewerage pumping stations (SPSs) across our service district. These pump stations help to move raw sewage also known as wastewater to sewage treatment plants, via a network of underground pipes.
To improve the operational efficiency of our sewerage pumping stations, we plan to upgrade the switchboards at 10 sites. Each upgrade will be completed in stages as this will enable us and our contractors to work safely, within social distancing guidelines.
How do sewerage pumping stations work?
While most of our sewerage network is gravity-fed, there are some locations where a pumping station is required to transfer wastewater from a low point to a higher level so it can continue its journey to a treatment plant.
These pumping stations have:
- an electrical switchboard for the power supply, pump controls and a communications mast, if required. The switchboard controls the automatic pump and remote monitoring system and provides a link to the underground pump cables in the chamber/wet well
- a small, freshwater service cabinet that is used to clean the sewer pumps during maintenance, and for hygiene purposes by our maintenance crew
- a concrete slab with safety guard rails and secured access lids. Underneath the slab is a chamber/wet well with pumps and valves
- an electrical main switch/isolator cabinet that is located between the power distributor’s pole and the electrical switchboard. These cabinets are installed at our newer, upgraded sites.
Some locations have a generator onsite to enable the pump station to function during a power outage.
