McCarthy Road Water Pump Station Upgrade
We’re upgrading our water pump station at McCarthy Road, Olinda to ensure the reliable supply of safe drinking water to customers. The equipment at this site is more than 50 years old and needs to be replaced.
The McCarthy Road pump station draws water from Melbourne Water’s Monbulk tanks and supplies drinking water to Silvan and our Olinda reservoir.
Our project partner, Simpson Construction Company, started work onsite in August 2023 and this upgrade is expected to take 12 months to complete, weather permitting.
Normal working hours will be 7:00 am to 5:30 pm Monday to Friday, with occasional Saturday works 7:00 am to 1:00 pm.
What's involved
This work includes:
- Demolishing the existing generator building.
- Installing a new generator, pumps, pipes, and pressure vessels.
- Upgrading the existing pump station building to improve roofing, ventilation and the electrical system.
To ensure there's minimal inconvenience and interruption to our water supply, this project will be progressed in stages.
By upgrading the pump station we’ll be able to operate the pumps from the new generator using an automatic switchover if there’s a mains power failure.
What to expect
- All construction work will be within the fenced pump station site.
- There’ll be extra trucks and vehicles on local roads and traffic management on some days when we bring heavy equipment and machinery to the pump station site. For your safety, please follow the traffic management changes and the directions of traffic controllers when they’re onsite.
- Some work may be noisy, especially when we’re demolishing the generator building.
- As we regularly assess the health and condition of the vegetation and trees at our critical sites, some trees may need to be removed for safety.
