M4 Water Main Renewal Project
Some of our pipes in this area are more than 100 years old and replacing them will reduce the risk of bursts and leaks – making your water supply more reliable.
One of the pipes in this area, the M4 water main, is nearing the end of its service life.
What’s involved in the works?
We’re investigating existing services and ground conditions at 28 sites from Coburg to Brunswick East. These investigations will be completed between May and November 2025 and are expected to take one to 2 days at each site.
- Working hours are Monday to Friday, from 7 am to 5 pm.
- There will be specialist equipment and machinery at each site and additional vehicles parked along residential streets.
- Some of our work will be noisy and disruptive.
- For your safety, we’ll have traffic management onsite where needed.
- When we’re finished, we’ll restore the sites to as close as possible to the condition they were in before.
- We don’t anticipate any interruption to your water or sewer services.
Checking for existing services
We’ll be using specialist scanning equipment and radars to detect water, sewer, gas, telecommunications and electrical underground services. This work is expected to take less than a day at each site.
Non-destructive digging
When existing underground services are identified close to our investigation sites, we use a vacuum truck with a high-pressure water hose to expose the services and record their exact location. This minimises the risk of damage to the buried infrastructure. This work usually takes less than a day to complete at each site and can be noisy. Investigations at some sites will be completed at night.
Geotechnical investigations
A drill rig is used to remove soil and rock samples for analysis and testing. There may be detours, traffic management and additional vehicles in residential streets. This drilling work is noisy. Depending on the location, ground conditions and weather, these investigations can take up to 2 days to complete at each site.
We may also complete specialist geophysical surveys in some streets. A slow-moving, mobile mapping vehicle determines the depth of rock by recording sound waves when a small weight is dropped onto the ground.

Project updates
July 2024
We've checked the condition of the existing M4 water main under the Bell Street bridge. To do this, a section of the Merri Creek Trail was closed overnight between Harding Street and De Chene Reserve, Coburg.
We had people at key locations to direct pedestrians and cyclists to an alternative route along Nicholson Street to cross Bell Street at the traffic lights.
This detour was planned for Thursday 18 July 2024 from 9 pm until 5 am on Friday 19 July 2024.
The map shows the detour off the Merri Creek Trail at Harding Street, back to Nicholson Street.
